Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is this fire code legal?

It depends on the state. In Arkansas and Ohio these are legal BY LAW. Other states will need to confirm with their State Fire Marshalls.

  • What kind of door should it be attached to?

The only door this device doesn’t need to be attached to is a completely glass door. Otherwise this device can go on classrooms, offices, storage, etc.  It doesn’t matter if the door is a push handled door or a hydraulic door.

  • Does it matter which way the door swings?

No it does not. This goes on inward or outward swinging.

  • What is the TIPS program? Are you on TIPS?

TIPS is an acronym for The Interlocal Purchasing System. TIPS is a national purchasing cooperative that offers access to competitively procured purchasing contracts to its membership. For governmental agencies such as public education organizations, higher education entities and city or county governments, membership in a purchasing cooperative offers the following benefits:

    · Access to competitively procured contracts with quality vendors

    · Savings of time and financial resources necessary to fulfill bid requirements

    · Assistance with purchasing process by qualified TIPS staff

    · Access to pricing based on a “national” high-profile contract

Also, YES, we are on TIPS!

  • Why does one of the devices have pins and the other one doesn’t?

The reason for the pins in one device and not the other is  for doors with big windows in them or around them. An intruder can’t just break the window, reach in and unlock door, it takes two hands from the inside to disengage barricade.  The other device is for all other doors or can be placed near bottom of door with small window for hard to reach access.

  • Can I get the device in a different color?

Yes, but the price does go up for any kind of specific colors and the lead time may increase as well.

  • Where do you put the separate U-bar (arm) and why is it separate?

We recommend keeping the U-bar separate for safety and liability reasons. Also, this is what separates our product from others by not making this readily accessible for just anyone to use. If you have a substitute that day, we recommend leaving sub plans so they will know where to locate the U-bar by keeping it in the same location in every classroom.  We stress that every classroom teacher keep it in the same location so any teacher walking by that room could find it and use it in an emergency situation.

  • Is this just for teachers?

No. This can be used by any staff that has a door nearby that they can get to during a lockdown. It also is not just for schools, many others are looking at this product in the business world including hospitals, military bases, and much more.

  • Do you have a residential model?

Yes,  it should be coming to market soon. If you are interested in being one of the first ones with a residential model then please email us so we can put you on a list and possibly get a discounted rate for one.

  • What happens if the device is engaged and you need to exit?

Simply disengage the device from the door and proceed to your nearest exit.

  • Can you run drills with these devices?

Yes. In some states, the active shooter drills/training is mandatory so this product helps you and your schools fulfill those obligations. We always encourage the practice regardless for muscle memory. Ideally, we would like people to respond to this with the same confidence as you would during a fire drill, tornado drill,  etc...

  • How easy is it for people to use?

Very easy.  We filmed kids engaging and disengaging the device. We made it simple because in this kind of situation, you are already going to be full of adrenaline. We didn’t want to complicate the process by making it hard. Simply watch some of our videos to see how simple it is.

  • How is this device different from others we have seen?

Our device keeps the parts to engage the device separate so that only the staff should know of the location. Our device is easily taken off and can be reapplied to another door (in case of a classroom move or tearing down a school and building a new one). Our device is not a tripping hazard on the floor. Our device can be used on any door. Our device is much smaller than most devices out there. Our device is one of the strongest products on the market. Our device doesn’t require electricity or a magnet. Our device is very cost efficient. Our device can withstand armor piercing ammunition. (See Videos)

  • Can this be taken off and put back on?

Yes! Our device is not restricted to one specific door.

  • Do you do installations?

In Arkansas, we can install the UBarricade for $15-$25 per door depending on volume of doors being installed.

  • How easy are these to install on a door?

All you need is simple hand tools: drill, drill bit, screwdriver tip and small rachet/socket or wrench. We have a video of an installation to help guide those wanting to install themselves and can be reached anytime for questions regarding installation process.

  • Can these be purchased through teacher budgets, PTOs, and donations?

Yes. Parent-Teacher Organizations are a great help in getting together funds for these. We have already had schools pay to get barricades by these methods.

  • Our doors have a wall running right up to the door at a 90 degree angle, would the device be able to work on that door?

Yes! No matter the angle, with our cylinder design, we have made our device flexible to fit almost any angle.

  • What kind of maintenance is required?

    No maintenance is required.
